Svalbard part 25

26 Augustus:
Today I climbed to the top of the Nordenskiolt together with Ruben and our supervisor. The Nordenskiolt is the highest mountain in the Longyearbyen area. You can see the mountain from our house, the mountain is approx. 3400 feet high. It was a beautiful day to climb the mountain. There were hardly any clouds so we could expect a magnificent view on the top. When its bad weather the mountain is often covered with clouds and fog. When we left, it was about 40 degrees (F) in the valley.

View towards the Nordenskiolt

Above you see a picture of the valley we had to climb through to go up. Two weeks ago there was quite a river coming down here but now there was hardly any water. This is because the temperature on the top of the mountain was well below zero and there was no melt water anymore. After climbing through the valley you had to walk over a ridge towards the top of the Nordenskiolt. On the way up we saw many fossils of leaves and stems of plants.

Stone with ice

After a two and a half hour climb we reached the top. The view was really magnificent, you could see incredibly far in all directions. We could see Daumannsoyra (at the tip of Isfjorden) and beyond that was Prins Karls Forland! It was a lot colder on top of the Nordenskiolt. It was at least a couple degrees below zero. In the picture above is a stone with ice on it.

Longyearbreen (Glacier)

On the way back we had a beautiful view of the Longyearbreen. This is the glacier that comes into the valley of Longyearbyen. In total the whole trip took us 5 hours and afterwards we were quite tired.
27 Augustus:

Our Helicopter

Today we flew with the helicopter. A friend of mine offered me a job to pack and ship her equipment to Aberdeen. Of course I asked if Ruben could be my assistant so he could join me in the helicopter.

Adventdalen seen from the Helicopter

Early in the afternoon we departed from Longyearbyen Airport towards Adventdalen to get her equipment. The weather was wonderful again so we had a great view. We flew over Longyearbyen towards Adventalen. Above you can see a picture of the river delta in Adventalen.

Longyearbyen seen from the Helicopter

Here you see two more air pictures of Longyearbyen. In the picture above you can see the UNIS (reddish-brown building left of the center). Pictured below you see our barracks at the end of the valley if you look very closely.
